My coming of age book is “that was
then, this is now.” By S.E Hinton. Thisbook is about a boy named Bryon and his
“brother” Mark. In this book Bryon
starts to realize that he and mark are completely different from each other. All
these events happen as bryon starts to mature and sees things in a different
perspective.
Bryon is a guy who likes to think
things through. Mark is a guy who likes to live in the moment. When Bryon and
mark’s friend, Charlie gets shot in front of their faces, Bryon starts to
realize that mark doesn’t like to think….what if… now after Charlie dies, Bryon
starts to see a change in mark. At first, Bryon thinks it’s because mark doesn’t
like his new girlfriend. But as time passes Bryon realizes that this isn’t the
case.
After a few months, Bryon finds out
that mark has been selling drugs. In the moment Bryon calls the cops, and turns
mark in for drug-selling. After testifying against him, marks last words to him
before jail were “I hate you buddy.” This made Bryon realize that he would
never forgive himself for turning in his best friend and brother to jail.
A lot of things changed Bryon, and made
him more mature. He realized after Charlie’s death that you can’t take people
for granted because “one second they are breathing, talking, thinking, and the
next they’re gone.” he also realized that some people aren’t what you thought
they were. This is how my character made decisions that made him more mature.
